Rock A Bye Baby

One of the funniest thing I ever saw was back in February when I saw this:

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (Cal-R) leading an all-male panel on Capitol Hill discussing women’s contraceptive coverage. I likened it to having an all woman panel discussing the right of a man to have a vasectomy. Like I said at the time, some woman need contraception for medical reasons. But it got the wheels in my head turning. Just why are these Republican men so hell-bent on having abortion abolished? Why do they want to pretend like we are back in the 1950’s?

And then there was Mississippi Republican State Rep. Bubba Carpenter who said this about woman who wanted abortions:

“It’s going to be challenged, of course, in the Supreme Court and all — but literally, we stopped abortion in the state of Mississippi, legally, without having to–  Roe vs. Wade. So we’ve done that. I was proud of it. The governor signed it into law. And of course, there you have the other side. They’re like, ‘Well, the poor pitiful women that can’t afford to go out of state are just going to start doing them at home with a coat hanger.’ That’s what we’ve heard over and over and over.

“But hey, you have to have moral values. You have to start somewhere, and that’s what we’ve decided to do. This became law and the governor signed it, and I think for one time, we were first in the nation in the state of Mississippi.

Ah yes! Good old Mississippi! The place I think of 1st when it comes to education (49th), job growth (44th), and if I want to be poor (1st). And now Mississippi is kicking up its heels by saying it’s the 1st state to nearly abolish abortion. The state that votes most of the time Republican.

You see, I figured out why Republicans seem to concern themselves with woman’s bodies so much. It’s not the woman that they are concerned about. It’s certainly not the moral high ground that they’re trying to push down everyone’s throat. This is about them. The men and their legacy. White men to be exact. Abortion is never an issue when 23-year-old African-American woman Keshia does it. Abortion is never an issue when 23-year-old Latino American woman Gabriella does it. Abortion is never an issue when 23-year-old Asian woman Suh Pak does it. It’s only an issue when now 23-year-old Caucasian woman Susan is does it. It bothers them that Susan want to have abortions of THEIR babies. They have nothing to link their past to. They are slowly being knocked out of their perch as the dominant race in this country.

They need heirs. They need a generation. A white generation to pass the keys to once they die out. But that’s not happening. With the influx of Asians and Latinos into this country legally or illegally and slow change of how people feel about young people of different races dating, getting married, and having children, white men are beginning to now become what they never thought they would be in this country: a minority. And they know this! So how do they stop it? By trying to do away with the thing that is the major obstacle standing in their way so that they can be back on top: Abortion.

They could care less about a woman’s body. They care about THEIR woman’s body. They don’t care about Keshia’s, Gabriella’s, or Suh Pak’s reasons for having an abortion. They care about SUSAN’s reasons for having an abortion. And they have the audacity to fix their mouths to say that it’s a moral issue. It makes me laugh because morals are the furthest thing from their minds. But it makes me sad because, even in 2012, it’s really about race. Not birth control, not contraceptive coverage, not even about the right to choose. Race. If the Republicans have anything to do with it, woman won’t have any choice. But rest assured, their push to try to take away of all woman’s choice isn’t about all woman. It’s about THEIR woman.

  1. Interesting theory, and not a bad one. I do think a lot of ’em are doing what they believe to be “God’s work”, and that it’s about pushing a religious agenda more so than a racial one, but I would guess that it’s true some others are motivated by the things you mentioned in your post. Now that the Census has declared minorities to be the new majority, these good old boys have gotta be sweating it! Their panic would be funny if it didn’t result in such backwards-ass legislation.
